Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his poor run of form against left-arm pacers in the first Test of the 2024/25 edition of the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Perth.
Jasprit Bumrah decided to bat first after winning the toss, and Mitch Starc was in rhythm right from his first over against the left-hander, swinging the ball in from over the wicket and then getting it to move away after falling on the seam.
After surviving the first over, where the ball went past his outside edge multiple times, Jaiswal lost his patience when Starc pitched the first ball of his next over on the full side of a good length, and he went for a full-blooded attacking drive away from his body. The ball took his edge and flew safely into the hands of Nathan McSweeney, who was fielding in the gully region on his debut.
The dismissal pattern concerns Jaiswal as he has been out on a similar length and from a similar angle against left-arm pacers.
Nandre Burger had troubled from the same over the wicket angle in South Africa, where his dismissals against Burger mostly came on length deliveries that jumped up on him, showing clear signs of struggle on surfaces with ample pace and bounce.
He is averaging only 8.3 against left-arm pacers overall, his worst performance against a bowling type by some margin.
While the delivery bowled by Starc wasn’t short, Jaiswal would have to be wary of not repeating the same mistake of playing a loose shot early on, just like he did on the first morning at the Optus Stadium. India rely on him for a good start in Australia, with him capable of emulating someone like a David Warner.
Bumrah’s men had an excellent opportunity for a good start in Perth after winning the toss, and getting the best conditions to bat. However, Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal squandered that opportunity after India lost both batters in the first hour of play itself with hardly anything on the board.
