Jaiswal becomes the second Indian Test centurion in Perth this millennium

Only Virat Kohli has scored a century for India in Perth in the 21st century apart from Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal continued on Day 3 of the first Border Gavaskar Trophy Test (BGT), where he left on Day 2 and scored the 10 runs he needed to bring up his century with ease, bringing up his century with an uppercut against Josh Hazlewood went for a six.

Jaiswal became the second Indian batter to score a Test century in Perth this millennium after Virat Kohli, who scored a century here in the 2018/19 edition of the BGT.

After getting out for a duck in the first innings, Jaiswal batted with a lot of patience and controlled his natural desire to play shots on the up which was his falling in the first innings. He left the ball well around and above his off stump, and reaped the benefits of it as he made the Australian pacers sweat hard on a hot day after they allowed India a 46 run first innings lead.

Jaiswal also added 201 runs for the first wicket along with KL Rahul, which is the biggest opening partnership by an Indian pair in Australia. Rahul also batted really well for his 77 but fell soon after Jaiswal’s hundred to an incoming delivery from Mitch Starc, who has been bowling brilliantly in this Test match.

Before Jaiswal and Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar (1992), Mohinder Amarnath (1977), and Sunil Gavaskar (1977) have scored a hundred in Perth. However, those centuries came at the old WACA ground, whose clay is used in the pitch of the Optus Stadium where Jaiswal and Kohli scored their centuries.

Jaiswal also achieved an interesting feat, where he became only the sixth visiting to score a hundred and a duck in the same Test in Australia in the 21st century. The only other Indian to achieve this is Cheteshwar Pujara in Melbourne, 2018.

With India already leading with more than 270 runs, Jaiswal will likely press the accelerator soon because small cracks have started appearing, and they’ll only increase in size.
