Winning this game was needed for the team atmosphere: Sanju Samson

Rajasthan Royals had lost the previous two games - to LSG and RCB respectively - but made amends by beating Chennai Super Kings by a margin of 32 runs

Rajasthan Royals had won four of the first five matches in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League, but then Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore got the better of them in back-to-back games to put them in a tough spot. Coming into the Chennai encounter, that too at the comfort of their home venue, they put up a comprehensive performance to down the table-toppers by 32 runs and snatched the top spot back.

The architect of the show was Yashasvi Jaiswal, whose 77 put CSK under pressure - from which the visitors could never really recover from. Sanju Samson, the RR skipper, stated that it was important for them to win the game so as to maintain the players’ confidence.

“Winning this game was needed for the team atmosphere and for the fans, also our first win in Jaipur,” Sanju Samson said in the post-match presentation.

Before this encounter, chasing teams had had more success at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, but Sanju Samson decided to stick to his template of posting a target for the opposition. While it worked well for them, Samson added that he doesn’t want to be very one-dimensional but rather takes decisions according to the situation.

“We can't go one-dimensional; if you're playing in Chinnaswamy or Wankhede, you will chase, but looking at the conditions here, I took the chance to bat first. Even when we batted, all the youngsters came in and did the job.

“The mindset of attacking is a nice change. Credit has to go to the management and the support staff for what players are doing, you see Jaiswal at the RR academy during the off-season playing a lot of balls,” Samson added.
