Who could replace Jay Shah as the next BCCI secretary?

Jay Shah is set to take over as the next ICC chairman and will leave behind his post as the BCCI secretary — a position he has held since 2019. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled to take place on September 27, and one of the agenda is expected to be zeroing in on Shah's replacement in the BCCI.

Here's a look at a few possible candidates:

Arun Dhumal

Arun Dhumal has vast experience in the administration of Indian cricket, having previously served as BCCI treasurer in 2019, before which he was the head of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA). He was appointed the Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman in 2022 and also holds the same post in the Women's Premier League (WPL) as well. Under Dhumal, two seasons of WPL have been played, and two more teams, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT), were added.

Anil Patel

Former Gujarat batter Anil Patel is currently the Gujarat Cricket Association's (GCA) secretary. The 66-year-old was also India's team manager during the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2023. Before that, he was also the team manager of the Indian side that participated in the Under-19 World Cup in 2016. Moreover, he held the same post for India A during their tour of South Africa in 2021.

Ashish Shelar

Ashish Shelar is currently serving as the Minister of School Education for the Government of Maharashtra since 2019. However, he was appointed as the vice-president of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) in 2015, and two years later, he took over as the president. In 2022, he was elevated as the BCCI treasurer - a post he still holds. Shelar has continued to have the backing of former BCCI president Sharad Pawar and also Amit Shah, the current home minister, who has previously been GCA's president.

Rohan Jaitley

According to multiple reports, Rohan Jaitley, son of prominent politician Arun Jaitley, is, in fact, the front-runner to replace Jay Shah as the BCCI secretary. Jaitley was elected unopposed as the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) president last year. However, in 2022, there was a bit of controversy attached to his name when he faced allegations of sexual assault from a model during his days as an emcee in the IPL, but it was unproven in court.
