What happens if the India-England semi-final is washed out?

Remember, unlike a normal T20 game, it can’t be a five-over-a-side-contest; instead, at least 10 overs need to be given to each side

There is a high probability of rain in Guyana during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final encounter between India and England, raising the possibility of a complete washout. In fact, the second semi-final doesn’t have a reserve day at all, but an extra 250 minutes will be activated to finish the game.

But that’s not the only exception for this game. There have been multiple layers to it. Let’s dive deep in.

According to Accuweather, “Intervals of clouds and sunshine with a couple of showers, mainly early in the day” are predicted, rendering it a difficult exercise to have a full game. The final is set to be played in Barbados 48 hours later - counted from the start of the semi-final - hence, it will be difficult for the teams to travel and rest. Hence, to avoid the predicament, the ICC has done away with the provision of the reserve day for the India-England game.

Let's understand the playing conditions.

However, the umpires are allowed to finish the game within the stipulated time plus 60 minutes. That means, in Indian Standard Time, the match can be started in the regulation time if it can start at 8:30. If it is delayed further than that, then we’ll start losing overs.

Remember, unlike a normal T20 game, it can’t be a five-over-a-side-contest; instead, at least 10 overs need to be given to each side. In case that’s not possible, another 190 minutes (minus 60 extra minutes) will be activated to finish the game in Guyana.

If the match still can’t be completed, even accounting for the DLS par score, India will progress to the final based on their better standing in the Super Eight stage. India had won all games in the Super 8 stage to finish at the top, whereas England were No.2 in their group behind South Africa.

"We don't want to think about the final, which is too far ahead. We want to think about how well we can play and what we can do as a team for us to achieve the result that we are looking for. Sometimes if you think too much, then you will not be able to make the decisions that you want to make on the field,” Indian skipper Rohit Sharma had said in the pre-match press conference.

“So, I think it's important that we stay clear in our mind about what we want to do. We have had enough conversations with the players about what is expected out of each one of us. So, it's time now to just rely on the individual instinct and then take the game forward," Rohit Sharma said about the Indian team's approach to the contest.”
