West Indies' Zaida James injured after a blow to her jaw

The left-arm spinner deflected a return catch from Laura Wolvaardt off her fingers to her side chin which forced her to walk off the field

West Indies Women’s left-arm spinner Zaida James dealt a bad blow while fielding off her own bowling in Match 3 of the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the middle-east. Playing against South Africa, James was hit on the chin while trying to take a return catch.

The incident occured in the second over of South Africa’s run chase. Laura Wolvaardt chipped a full ball straight towards James who was late to react. The ball ricocheted off James’ fingers pointing up and hit her straight on the side of her chin. The blow led to a cut which further resulted in bleeding. It was James’ first ball in the game as she was asked to share the new ball with the medium-pacer Chinelle Henry.

James’ left was seen considerably swelled up while she was receiving treatment on the ground from the physio. After a brief halt in the game, the 19-year-old was taken off the field with no further update on her further involvement in the game.

South Africa eventually won the game by 10 wickets, chasing 118 with more than two overs to spare.
