After a stellar display on day two, Akash Deep bowled one of the worst deliveries of the year when he strayed one outside the pitch on day three at the Gabba. In an attempt to keep Carey away from the strike the next over, the Bengal pacer attempted a wide yorker, which went beyond the strip.
It left the Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant gasping for breath as the 27-year-old had to leap full stretch to get his hands on the ball, which was running away towards the third-man region for a boundary. The Bengal pacer walked back, scratching his nose, almost in a way to show how embarrassed he was after that ball.
Isa Guha, who was commentating on the game, couldn’t stop herself from comparing that moment to the ‘infamous’ start from Steve Harmison in the 2007 Ashes. It was at the same venue 17 years ago that Harmison bowled a terrible first-ball in the history of the sport, with the ball travelling straight to the second slip.
England’s then-skipper Andrew Flintoff was also left unimpressed after that start to the much-awaited Ashes. In the end, however, Akash Deep accounted for the Australian wicketkeeper, who hooked the ball straight to Shubman Gill, who was placed in the mid-wicket region for that shot.
