The first match of the Caribbean Premier League 2024 turned out to be a thriller, with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots defeating Antigua and Barbuda Falcons by just one wicket on the final delivery of the game at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on August 29 (Thursday).
Playing their first season, the Falcons lost Teddy Bishop in the second over of the innings but Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman hit 43 off 32 to get them going. Jewel Andrew (30-ball 50*) and Fabian Allen (17-ball 24*) then got runs at a good pace down the order and got their team to 163/4 in 20 overs.
The Patriots got off to a steady start, with their top three - Evin Lewis (25 off 24), Andre Fletcher (25 off 16) and Kyle Mayers (39 off 24) - all getting handy runs. They were 111/3 at one stage but that’s when Shamar Springer (4/29) and Roshon Primus (2/21) triggered a collapse.
St Kitts and Nevis needed seven runs off the last over and had three wickets remaining. They lost two in the first three deliveries, getting the equation down to 5 off 3. Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi, however, got the required runs and took their team over the line on the last ball of the match.
