Karun Nair’s dream run in the 2024 Maharaja Trophy finally ended as after a streak of 66, 124*, 66 & 45, the Mysore Warriors skipper perished for a golden duck to endure his first real failure of the season.
But Nair’s was not the only streak that came to an end as after three consecutive wins, Mysore slipped to a five-wicket defeat at the hands of Gulbarga Mystics to slip to fourth on the points table. The victory, meanwhile, pushed Gulbarga to second.
Sent into bat, Mysore posted 154/9 after reeling at 92/8. They were shot down by a sensational five-fer from Gulbarga quick Abhishek Prabhakar, who picked up the second five-fer of the season in as many days, following Lavish Kaushal’s 5/23 against the Tigers on August 23 (Friday). Abhishek finished with figures of 5/21 to make it 9 wickets for the season.
From 92/8, J Suchith (25* off 22), Manoj Bhandage (38* off 14) and Vidyahar Patil (10* off 2) led a sensational fightback as the Warriors got to 154/9.
In response, though, Gulbarga never found themselves in trouble and managed to stitch partnerships regularly. A fifty from Smaran R and handy contributions from the rest helped them win the contest with seven balls to spare.
