WCPL 2024: TKR bring in Samarawickrama as Lanning's replacement

The Sri Lankan batter joins Shikha Pandey, Jemimah Rodrigues and Jess Jonassen as the overseas players for the Knight Riders

Trinbago Knight Riders have brought in Sri Lankan batter Harshitha Samarawickrama as a replacement for the injured Meg Lanning for the 2024 Women’s Caribbean Premier League

Samarawickrama joins Shikha Pandey, Jemimah Rodrijonagues and Jess Jonassen as the overseas players for the Knight Riders.

Lanning recently featured in the Hundred, where she captained London Spirit to the title. The Australian batter, however, didn’t have a great season with the bat. She could only manage 170 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 125.

Meanwhile, Samarawickrama has been in pretty good form of late. The 26-year-old scored a match-winning 69* in the grand finale of the Women’s Asia Cup, where Sri Lanka got the better of India.

The left-handed batter then scored back-to-back fifties in the T20I series against Ireland before slamming a century against the same opponents in the ODI series.

Overall, Samarawickrama has 1,463 runs in 61 T20I innings for Sri Lanka at an average of 31.12 and a strike rate of 99.72.

The Knight Riders will play their first game of the WCPL 2024 against Barbados Royals on August 22 (Thursday).
