This trophy is for the entire nation: Rohit Sharma

Here’s what India skipper Rohit Sharma said about the T20WC triumph during the victory parade held in Mumbai on July 4 (Thursday)

Team India had their victory parade on July 4 (Thursday) in Mumbai, after which the entire side finally congregated at a packed Wankhede Stadium. Skipper Rohit Sharma addressed a loud and jubilant crowd which simply couldn’t get enough of the superstars in front.

Here is what Rohit said during his eight-minute speech in front of his home faithful.

‘This trophy is for the entire nation’

“The reception we’ve got here tells you the kind of enthusiasm, the kind of wait people had. This trophy is for the entire nation. Along with all the players who have represented the country, the people who have been wanting for us to win the trophy - this trophy belongs to them.

“Mumbai never disappoints when it comes to winning trophies. To bring this trophy back to Wankhede feels very, very special.

“The fans have been waiting for 13 years to see a World Cup triumph, and finally it’s here. I’m very happy and relieved.”

‘Thought Miller’s shot would go for a six’

“I was standing at long-on and Suryakumar was at long-off, and obviously Hardik was bowling that crucial over for us. Hats off to him for bowling that final over, there is always pressure no matter how many runs are there to be defended.

“We discussed a few technical aspects - the wind was blowing quite heavily and we had a brief chat about what we wanted to do. We knew how dangerous a player David Miller was.

“When it went up in the air, I thought it may go all the way [with the wind], but it was written, everything was written. For Surya to take that catch was exceptional.

“When we say practice makes a man perfect, that is what it is. He has practiced that catch so many times in training, and we know when the pressure is there and those catches need to be taken, you can recall what you did in training. To take that catch right on the boundary was a great effort.”

‘Lucky to have a team like this’

“I’m very lucky to have a team like this, who, at any given point in time, want to stand up and get the job done for the team. It is all the players and the support staff who are responsible for this triumph. The work for this triumph started 3-4 years ago.”
