WATCH: Third umpire gives Jaiswal out despite snickometer showing nothing

The Indian opener wasn’t impressed and was seen arguing with the on-field umpires before going back to the hut

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was involved in a controversial caught-behind decision in the final session of day five of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on December 30 (Monday).

Chasing 340, India kept losing wickets at the other end, but Jaiswal held firm. The left-handed batter scored 84 before falling to Pat Cummins on the fifth delivery of the 71st over.

Cummins dropped a bumper down the leg and Jaiswal threw his bat while attempting a pull shot. There was a clear deviation, and the ball went into Alex Carey's gloves, but the on-field umpire, Joel Wilson, gave it not out. Cummins was confident, and so was wicketkeeper Carey.

Australia wasted no time in sending the decision upstairs, and the third umpire, Sharfuddoula Shahid Saikat, looked at all the replays before checking the snickometer. It was pretty evident from the replays that there was a deviation off Jaiswal’s bat and gloves, but the snickometer showed nothing.

That didn’t bother Sharfuddoula, who overturned the on-field decision. Jaiswal wasn’t impressed and was seen arguing with the on-field umpires before going back to the hut. He survived for 208 deliveries but couldn’t hang around to save the Test for India.

"I don't know what to make of that because the technology didn't show anything, but with the naked eye it seemed like he did touch something. I don't know how the umpires want to use the technology, but in all fairness, I think he did touch the ball," said Rohit Sharma after the match, which India lost by 184 runs.

"It's about the technology, which we know is not 100% - more often than not we are the ones falling on the wrong side of it… that's where we are unfortunate."
