There are days in cricket when one player can do almost everything. Sam Curran had that kind of a day on August 4 (Sunday) while playing for the Oval Invincibles against the London Spirit in the London Derby at Lord’s.
The Invincibles' all-rounder scored an unbeaten fifty while batting first and then turned the heat on the cross-city rivals with the ball. He tamed the Spirit with a hat-trick, which resulted in him picking a five-wicket haul eventually.
He became the first cricketer in The Hundred (both men's and women’s) history to take a hat-trick, score a fifty and have a five-wicket haul in the same game in the 100-ball format.
The 26-year-old, who scored 51* off just 22 balls with the willow, took the wickets of Matt Critchley, Dan Lawrence and Andre Russell to get the hat-trick while bowling his last 10 balls at a stretch. He eventually took the wicket of Daniel Worrall to complete his five-wicket haul and help Invincibles beat the Spirit by 30 runs to get to the top of the points table.
Before Curran, Imran Tahir of the Birmingham Phoenix (2021 vs Welsh Fire) and Tymal Mills of the Southern Brave (2023 vs Welsh Fire) had taken the other two hat-tricks in The Hundred Men’s competition.
