Steve Smith goes past Allan Border, Michael Hussey with 35th Test ton

Smith now has 16 Test centuries as an Australian skipper, the second-most behind Ricky Ponting

Steve Smith smashed his 35th Test ton on January 29 (Wednesday) on Day 1 of the first Test of the two-match series against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Cricket Stadium in Galle. 

With this, he not only became the fourth Australian to reach the landmark of 10,000 Test runs but also became the first Aussie cricketer to hit more than two Test tons against Australia. 

Smith went past the record jointly held by Michael Hussey, Shaun Marsh, Darren Lehmann, Damien Martyn and himself, for most tons by Australians in Tests in Sri Lanka.

That was not the only record that the 35-year-old broke, who is also captaining the side in regular skipper Pat Cummins’ absence. Smith now has 16 Test centuries as an Australian skipper. 

Steve Smith hits 47th international ton

He went past Allan Border’s record of 15 Test centuries as an Aussie skipper. Now, Smith is only behind Ricky Ponting amongst Australian players with the most Test tons as captains. 

Graeme Smith of South Africa holds the record for most Test tons as captain. He smashed 25 of them while Virat Kohli hit 20 hundreds as skipper in red-ball cricket.
