Stats: Ashwin becomes the second-fastest bowler to 500 Test wickets

Ravichandran Ashwin has 500 Test wickets to his name. With the wicket of Zak Crawley, he became the second Indian bowler and the ninth overall to achieve this feat in the longest format of the sport. 

Here are a few notable stats from his journey.

-Ashwin reached the 500th wicket mark in just 98 matches, the second-fastest after Muttiah Muralitharan from Sri Lanka. 

-Ashwin is India's fastest to every 50-wicket landmark, from 50 to 500. 

-Overall, he is the fastest to 250 and 300 wickets (45 and 54 matches), joint-fastest to 350 wickets with Muralitharan (66 games), and second-fastest to 400 (77) and 450 (89) behind Murali (72 and 80). 

-Ashwin (98) is the leading wicket-taker for India against England in Tests. BS Chandrashekar (95) held this record till the second Test. Among Asian bowlers, only Muralitharan leads the list with 112.

-Out of his 500 wickets, Ashwin has had an almost equal share against both left-handers and right-handers. He has 249 wickets against the lefties compared to 251. 

-The 249 wickets he has of left-handers are the most by a bowler in Tests. Ashwin and James Anderson (217) are the only two bowlers with 200+ wickets against left-handers. 

-347 out of his 500 wickets have come in home conditions. Ashwin has bagged those wickets at an average of 21.2, and he has a wicket every 46.7 balls. 

-Only four bowlers, Murali (493), Anderson (434), Stuart Broad (398), and Anil Kumble (350), have more wickets than him at home. 

-Ashwin has 26 five-wicket hauls at home, the joint-second-most, alongside Rangana Herath by a bowler. Only Murali (45) has more and by a distance.  

Overall, he has 34 five-wicket-hauls, the second-most among Indians after Anil Kumble (35). 

-Out of the 500, he has dismissed a batter through "bowled" 100 times, the most by an Indian bowler. 

-Ashwin has dismissed Ben Stokes 12 times, the joint-most by an Indian bowler against a batter. Kapil Dev has dismissed Mudassar Nazar (Pakistan) 12 times in 18 innings. 

-In tests, only two players have hit five centuries and picked up 25+ five-wicket hauls. One is Ashwin, and the other is Ian Botham (100s - 14 & 5WI - 25).
