Sri Lanka’s Shammi Silva replaces Jay Shah as ACC President
Silva was named as ACC President on December 6 (Friday) and resumed his charge on the same day
After Jay Shah took charge of the International Cricket Council (ICC) as chairman, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may still be searching for his replacement as Secretary, but the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) was quick to announce Shammi Silva, President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) as his successor.
Silva was named as ACC President on December 6 (Friday) and resumed his charge on the same day as well. Before being named President, Silva served as chairman of the ACC Finance & Marketing Committee.
“It is a great honour to lead the Asian Cricket Council,” Silva was quoted as saying in a statement by the ACC.
"Cricket is the heartbeat of Asia, and I look forward to working closely with all member nations to elevate the game, provide opportunities for emerging talent, and strengthen the bonds that unite us through this beautiful sport," added the 64-year-old.
Talking about his predecessor Shah, the Sri Lankan said, “Under Shah’s time at the helm, the ACC achieved remarkable milestones, including successfully achieving the highest value for its commercial rights of ACC Asia Cup tournaments for 2024–31, the introduction of a new pathway events structure, and the continued development and growth of cricket across its member nations.”
It would be crucial to see how Silva deals with the upcoming headache, the Asia Cup 2025. If the hybrid model for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan is agreed upon, as is being discussed in the media, then the Asia Cup, scheduled to be hosted by India next year, could also create similar headlines.
