5 key highlights from South Africa's win over Netherlands

The 65-run partnership between David Miller and Tristan Stubbs ushered South Africa home from a tricky situation

Netherlands’ rocky start

Asked to bat first, Netherlands lost three wickets in the first five overs. Marco Jansen hit the mark right away, picking 2/11 in his first spell. Ottneil Baartman struck once from the other end, courtesy of a brilliant catch from Jansen at first slip. Netherlands were 20/3 after powerplay before crashing to 48/6 in 12 overs.

Engelbrecht, de Leede save the Dutch from embarrassment

Sybrand Engelbrecht and Bas de Leede forged a 54-run stand (from 45 deliveries) to save Netherlands from the embarrassment of a double-digit score. Engelbrecht scored 40 off 45 balls and de Leede contributed 23 from 22 deliveries. They carried Netherlands from 48/6 to 102/6 in 19 overs.

Baartman runs through them in the final over

Baartman conceded only one run in the final over while picking three wickets to finish with figures of 4/11 in his four overs. Netherlands couldn’t score vital runs in the final over and were eventually restricted to 103/9.

South Africa’s poor start

Starting their chase of 104, South Africa were 3/3 in no time. Quinton de Kock was run out without facing a ball. Reeza Hendricks received a ripping in-swinger. And the skipper, Aiden Markram, was strangled down the leg-side. It felt like the Proteas would slip on the Dutch banana peel again.

At powerplay, they were 16/4 with Heinrich Klaasen also back in the hut.

That's when Miller saves the day with Stubbs

From 12/4 in the fifth over, David Miller added 65 off 72 balls with Tristan Stubbs to keep South Africa in the contest. Stubbs (33 from 37) was eventually out in the 17th over but Miller carried on, scoring an unbeaten 59 off 51 balls and hitting the winning six. South Africa won by four wickets and seven balls to spare.
