Devine to step down as New Zealand’s T20I captain after T20 World Cup

The 34-year-old will continue to play the 20-over format and will also be in charge of the ODI team

Sophie Devine is set to step down as New Zealand’s T20I captain after the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, which will be played in the UAE in October. The 34-year-old all-rounder, however, will continue to play the 20-over format and will also be in charge of the ODI team.

Devine has captained New Zealand in 56 T20Is. Overall, the all-rounder has featured in 135 T20Is for New Zealand, scoring 3268 runs at an average of 28.66 and a strike rate of 121.89. She has also claimed 117 wickets at an economy rate of 6.54.

"I'm very proud to have had the privilege to captain the White Ferns in both formats. With captaincy comes an additional workload that, while I've enjoyed taking on, can also be challenging at times,” said Devine.

"Stepping away from the T20 captaincy will take a bit off my plate so I can focus more of my energy on my playing role and nurturing the future leaders."

Devine, however, wants to continue leading New Zealand in the 50-over format, with the ODI World Cup set to be played in India next year. "I'm not ready to give up ODI captaincy just yet. But I won't be around forever, so I think stepping away from captaining one format at a time gives the next leaders time to find their feet."

Meanwhile, head coach Ben Swayer said, “Soph is the epitome of a fearless leader and we're really grateful for the leadership she brings to this group on and off the field.

"She's one of the most experienced White Ferns ever and her leadership and knowledge of the game has been so valuable as we have introduced several young players into the team over the past two years.

"I know the decision wasn't easy for Soph, but I fully support it and know that she's still going to be a prominent leader in the group."

The veteran all-rounder is currently recovering from a foot injury ahead of the three-match T20I series in Australia next month. New Zealand are yet to announce their squad for the T20 World Cup.
