India’s Smriti Mandhana scripted history at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 29 (Tuesday) as she surpassed Mithali Raj to go atop the hundreds chart for India in Women’s ODIs.
Mandhana entered the third ODI against New Zealand, series decider, with seven WODI hundreds to her name, the same as Mithali. Batting second, she smashed a sensational match-winning 100 off 122 deliveries to script history and become the outright highest century-maker for India in the 50-over format.
Mandhana smashed 10 boundaries in her knock and got to her century in the 40th over, taking a single off the bowling of Eden Carson. In anticlimactic fashion, however, the left-hander perished the very next ball after bringing up her century, being cleaned up by medium pacer Hannah Rowe.
Still, she’d done her job by then as India eventually cruised to a handsome six-wicket victory to seal the three-match series.
The 28-year-old had a T20 World Cup 2024 campaign to forget, averaging 18.75 while striking at 94.93, but she continues to dominate 50-over cricket. Despite scores of 5 & 0 in the first two ODIs, the left-hander has scored three hundreds and a 90 in her last six innings in the 50-over format.
This was already a special series for Mandhana, who in the first ODI led India in a WODI for the first time ever. The left-hander got the chance to captain India in the first ODI after incumbent skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was rested due to a niggle.
