Smith confirms he will go under the hammer in the IPL 2025 auction

Smith scored 336 runs in nine innings in the Major League Cricket 2024 and took his team Washington Freedom to the title

Australian cricketer Steve Smith has confirmed that he will be throwing in his hat for the India Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction to try and get another crack at the richest cricket league in the world.

“I’d certainly love another opportunity at the IPL,” Smith told Fox Cricket on August 16 (Friday). “I’ll be throwing my name in the hat, and we’ll see how we go,” added the 35-year-old.

Considering why he thinks he could be picked for the IPL, Smith said, “I feel like in every opportunity I’ve had in T20 cricket recently and franchise stuff, I’ve played quite nicely. So hopefully, I just keep putting my name up there and enjoying it.”

This is true because the former Australian captain scored 336 runs in nine innings of the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024, where he led his side, Washington Freedom, to the title by scoring 88 in the final. He struck at 148.36 in the entire tournament.

Ricky Ponting coached Smith in the US domestic T20 competition. Both Smith and Ponting are without an IPL contract and are looking for a way inPonting and Smith were last associated with the Delhi Capitals in the IPL.

Regarding his international T20 aspirations, the right-handed batter said he is unaware of the selectors’ plans. “In terms of international T20s, I don’t know what’s going on there. They’ve got some people they want to bring in, and that’s fine,” he said.

“I’m not that fussed. I’ll just go about my business, keep trying to improve and get better."
