Mohammed Shami achieved a rare feat, becoming the eighth Indian pacer to enter the 200 T20 wickets club on December 11. The right-arm pacer reached the milestone in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024-25 quarterfinal clash against Baroda, with the wicket of Shivalik Sharma.
The Bengal pacer didn’t end there, picking up Atit Sheth on the very next delivery to scalp his 201st wicket in the shortest format. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is still the gold standard for wickets in the T20 format for an Indian pacer, with 310 strikes in total. Jasprit Bumrah stands second with 295 wickets.
The Amroha-born pacer has the opportunity to go past Umesh Yadav (202) and Arshdeep Singh (203) if his side Bengal make it to the semi-final stage of the competition. Incidentally, Shami also became only the third Indian pacer to scalp 200 wickets across formats, joining Bumrah and Bhuvi on the list.
Most wickets for Indian pacers in T20s
310 - Bhuvneshwar Kumar
295 - Jasprit Bumrah
244 - Harshal Patel
234 - Jaydev Unadkat
214 - Sandeep Sharma

It would be interesting to see if Shami’s display gets him the nod to fly Down Under to be part of India’s squad for the remainder of the three Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
