Shubman Gill rues ‘poor’ batting display for loss against LSG

Gill also credited the bowlers for their exceptional display to restrict LSG to just 163

Opting to bat first, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) were jolted pretty early in the clash when they were reduced to 18/2. But then a partnership between KL Rahul (33 off 31) and Marcus Stoinis (58 off 43) took the franchise to 163, a score that seemed a few runs above the par total at the venue.

And, at 54/0, it seemed like everything was going right for Gujarat Titans, who were favourites to chase the total down. That’s when Yash Thakur stepped up and left an impression on the game with a five-wicket haul, including removing Gill, who was in prime form.

Barring the opening partnership (54 runs), none of the other batters put together a stand that could take the game away from Lucknow, something GT’s skipper Shubman Gill emphasised in the post-match presentation.

“It was a good wicket to bat on, a poor batting performance by us. We got a decent start, but we lost wickets in the middle and couldn't recover from that,” Gill had to say in the post-match presentation.

Not just that, Gill also hailed the bowlers for their ‘exceptional performance’, which restricted a power-packed LSG batting unit to just 163.

“Our bowlers were exceptional as they restricted them to 160-odd, our bowlers let us down. Miller is a kind of a player who can change a game in a couple of overs, this total was very gettable for us,” he added.

Gill also spoke about his own dismissal, stating that his intention was to continue attacking the bowling unit and make the fullest use of the powerplay. Unfortunately, he missed a rather straight delivery, resulting in his downfall and triggering a collapse later on.

“I thought it was the last over of the powerplay and I just wanted to make the most of it, just that I missed that bowl as I tried to play a bit too score. It was tremendous to watch our bowlers bowl, we were looking forward to restricting them around 160-165,” he added.

With three losses in five games, Gujarat find themselves in a rather unfamiliar situation, at the foothill of the table, with just four points. They will be hoping to resurrect their campaign against the rampant Rajasthan Royals on April 10 (Wednesday).
