Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on Wednesday, September 25, that 115 South Africans and 75 internationals will be up for grabs in the SA20 player auctions, scheduled to be held in Cape Town on October 1. Players from 14 countries will constitute the auction. Among the international stars, Shamar Joseph, Josh Little, Naseem Shah, Saqib Mahmood, Qais Ahmad, and Kamindu Mendis could potentially feature in the tournament next year.
CSA is believed to have received applications from over 600 players, but only 13 will be sold over the course of the auction. Speaking of the auction, league commissioner Graeme Smith said, “Some of the biggest names on the international T20 circuit have already signed up for season 3 and I am looking forward to see how the teams finalise their squads from this competitive auction list of players.”
Each team is allowed to have 19 players in the squad — 10 South Africans, 7 internationals, one rookie, and one wildcard pick. The rookie draft will take place after the auction. Any South African aged 22 or below on the day of the auction is eligible to be picked. Rookies can be bought in the original auction, but if they are not, they can be picked in the draft thereafter.
Paarl Royals have the biggest purse of R11.950m to spend at the auction. Western Cape neighbours MI Cape Town are next with R8.275m, followed by Pretoria Capitals, with a spend of R4.575m.
Joburg Super Kings have R3.925m with back-to-back champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape having R2.845m to spend. Last season’s runners-up, Durban’s Super Giants, have a R2.35m remaining balance in their purse.
