Shakib Al Hasan picks up a nine-wicket haul on County return

The 37-year-old’s only County Championship appearance this season came against Somerset

On September 12 (Thursday), Bangladesh’s superstar Shakib Al Hasan turned up for Surrey in fine fashion, picking up nine wickets in their clash against Somerset. Shakib effectively replaced Sai Sudharsan in Surrey’s line-up after the Tamil Nadu batter returned home to be involved in the Duleep Trophy 2024.

The all-rounder, who made his 2024 County Championship debut for Surrey, picked up four wickets in the first innings, scalping Tom Abell, Kasey Aldrige, Craig Overton and Brett Randell.

While he narrowly missed on a five-wicket haul in the first innings, the 37-year-old picked up the 25th fifer of his career in the second innings. The left-arm spinner struck early to remove Archie Vaughan before accounting for Abell for the second time in the clash.

Shakib didn’t stop there, running through the middle-order, with the scalps of James Rew and Lewis Gregory. Tom Banton, who walked in at No.11, was Shakib’s last victim after the Somerset batter braved an injury, batting on one leg.

The 37-year-old’s previous appearance at the County Championship came all the way back in 2011 when he represented Worcestershire, where he picked up a four-wicket haul and then followed it with a three-fer in the second dig.
