Sean Williams, the second-most capped player for Zimbabwe in the shortest format, has reportedly announced his retirement from T20Is in the aftermath of the five-match T20I series against Bangladesh. There hasn’t been an official announcement regarding the same, but it is believed that Williams informed his teammates about his decision to retire after the series.
"He (Williams) decided to retire from T20I and informed about his decision to his team mates following the game," a BCB official said, reported Cricbuzz.
It brings to an end one of the longest T20I careers in the sport’s history. Williams made his debut back in November 2006, as a 20-year-old, against Bangladesh. Incidentally, his last game has also ended up coming against The Tigers in Bangladesh, albeit 18 years later.
Williams ends his 18-year-long T20I career as not just the second-most capped Zimbabwe player, but also the second-highest run-getter for the country. Only Sikandar Raza (1947) has scored more runs for Zimbabwe than Williams’ 1691. He is also one of three Zimbabwe batters to have posted 10+ T20I fifties for the country.
Williams, in his 81-match career, also led Zimbabwe 12 times. He last captained Zimbabwe as recently as December 2023, in the three-match T20I series against Ireland.
