Sanath Jayasuriya appointed Sri Lanka’s permanent head coach

The team’s extraordinary performance under his coaching has seen SLC give him a permanent gig for the next 18 months

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have confirmed that former skipper Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed the permanent head coach of the Men’s side on an 18-month deal that will see him take charge till March 2026.

Jayasuriya, who was initially roped in as a consultant to oversee the training and coaching of all teams aligned with the high performance center, took over as interim head coach of the team in July this year. He was supposed to handle the role only till the end of Sri Lanka's tour of England in September.

However, the team’s extraordinary performance under his coaching has seen SLC give him a permanent gig for the next 18 months.

“The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket made this decision taking into consideration the team’s good performances in the recent tours against India, England, and New Zealand, where Jayasuriya was in charge as the interim head coach,” SLC said in the release.

“The appointment came into effect on October 1, 2024, and will remain until March 31, 2026.”

Under Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka won a bilateral ODI series against India for the first time in 27 years. They then competed well in England and won the third Test of the three-match series at The Oval.

The England series was followed up with a whitewash at home over New Zealand, who got humiliated in the recently concluded two-Test series.

Sri Lanka’s next assignment is a white-ball series at home against the West Indies, after which they will tour South Africa for a crucial two-Test series. The Lankans are very much still in the hunt to make it to the World Test Championship final.
