Saima Thakor handed T20I debut as Hayley Matthews opts to bowl in Mumbai

Thakor made her ODI debut against Australia earlier this month and has picked up three wickets in her three matches so far

West Indies women skipper Hayley Matthews won the toss. They decided to bowl first in the first T20I of the three-match series against hosts India women on December 15 (Sunday) at the DY Patil Sports University Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur informed that India will have a debutant in pacer Saima Thakor. This will be her T20I debut, having already played three ODIs and made her India debut in the Australia series last week.

“Honestly I couldn’t ask for a better place to make my debut in front of my friends, family and people I know,” Saima said after she came to know of her T20I debut at her home ground.

“I know the conditions here and want to be the game changer and I would want to win games for India,” added the 28-year-old.

India women are waiting to end their T20I series win drought at home. It has been five years since the Harmanpreet Kaur side last won a T20I series at home.

What did the captains say at the toss?

Harmanpreet Kaur: We would have bowled first as well. We just want to play good cricket in this series. We did well, especially in India. This is our first game in India after the T20 WC. Saima is making her debut.

Hayley Mathews: We are going to bowl first. Looks like the wicket won't change much. For us, we just want to play our best brand of cricket.
