South Africa captain Temba Bavuma was adjudged caught behind off Mohammad Abbas's bowling for 40 off 78 on day four of the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan in Centurion. Bavuma charged down to a delivery on length and looked to clear the in-field, trying to take the Proteas closer to victory in pursuit of 148.
But the ball jagged back in and went past his inside edge. Pakistan appealed and and the finger went up. Bavuma too did not have any objections. However, the replays suggested that there was a small spike when the ball went past his bat, but that was generated as the bat hit Bavuma's pocket.
South Africa had all three reviews left, but Bavuma did not challenge the umpire's call. The Proteas had the edge in the game until then as they needed just 52 more runs at that point with six wickets intact.
However, the batter's dismissal caused a collapse, as they were reduced to 99/8 in a span of two overs. David Bedingham (14), Kyle Verrynne (2) and Corbin Bosch (0) followed their skipper back to the hut in just a matter of a few minutes.
The onus is now on Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Dane Paterson to ensure that South Africa get home after being on top for most of the match.
