Abhishek Sharma continued his terrible run in T20Is, getting out for an eight-ball seven in the first T20I against South Africa at Kingsmead in Durban. In just his second game, the left-hander was at his dazzling best for the Men in Blue, smashing a century to remember for the ages. On that occasion, the 24-year-old scored a 61-ball 100 at a strike rate of 212.76.
However, the same can’t be said for the rest of his T20I career, with one failure followed by another. Since the century, the left-hander had scores of 10, 14, 16, 15, 4 heading into the first T20I. There was a prime opportunity for him to turn his bad fortune around but the left-hander did not take it with both hands.
Abhishek mistimed Gerald Coetzee’s delivery straight into the hands of Aiden Markram to continue his shambolic display. Amongst all the batters in the powerplay this year, the left-hander averages 13.17, with six dismissals, the second-worst for any individual in the phase.
Only Towhid Hridoy has an average worse than Abhishek in T20Is (10.25) in overs 1-6 this year. While the left-hander isn’t going to be dropped anytime soon, he will definitely be worried about his lean patch after a dazzling display in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, where he scored 484 runs, striking at 204.22.
