Rohit Sharma 'quite relieved' to win the T20 World Cup

Rohit Sharma also revealed that he has carried a piece of the pitch with him

On June 29 (Saturday), Indiaโ€™s hard work finally came to fruition when they lifted the T20 World Cup 2024 after besting South Africa in a nervy encounter by seven runs. Since the 2022 T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma's India have looked the strongest of all teams, with just two defeats across the two editions.

It all started with meticulous hard work and planning and ended with celebrations that were quite spontaneous and instinctive.ย

โ€œNothing was scripted. It was all coming instinctively. I was feeling the moment,โ€ Rohit said in a video posted by the BCCI.

During the celebration, Rohit was also seen lifting a patch of the pitch, which he later revealed was a โ€˜memoryโ€™ that he took alongside him.ย

โ€œWhen I went to the pitch, that pitch gave us this trophy. I will remember that ground forever in my life and that pitch as well. I wanted to have a piece of it with me. Those moments are very special, the place where all our dreams came true and I wanted something of it. The feeling actually is surreal. It hasnโ€™t sunk in yet,โ€ he said.

It was a great way for the Indian trio - Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja - to bow out of the shortest format, as winners at the 2024 global event.ย

โ€œItโ€™s been a great moment right from the time the game got over to till now. It feels like a dream. It feels like it hasnโ€™t happen. Although it has happened but it feels like it hasnโ€™t happened .. (laughs).

โ€œThatโ€™s the emotions and feelings you have. We have dreamt about this for such a long period of time, we worked hard as a unit for such a long period of time and to see this (the trophy) with us it feels quite relieved as well. When you worked hard for something and eventually at the end you get it, feels really really nice.

โ€œLast night we had a good time, we had a blast with the teammates till the early morning. I would say I didnโ€™t sleep properly but thatโ€™s absolutely fine by me. There is lot of time for me to go back and sleep. I am going to catch up on that. I want to live this moment, each minute, each second that is passing by and will try to make the most out of it,โ€ he said.
