Rohit Sharma becomes oldest Indian captain to bowl in ODI history

It was Rohit’s first spell in ODIs since he rolled his arm against the Netherlands in the ODI World Cup 2023

266 days after his previous spell, on August 4 (Sunday), Rohit Sharma rolled his arm over in the 50-over format in India’s second ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo. It was also Rohit’s first over against Sri Lanka since his five-over spell in the Asia Cup 2014.

Rohit, who no longer bowls regularly, was forced to take responsibility after Shivam Dube’s two overs went for 10 runs. Washington Sundar's splendid spell in which he took 3/30, enticed the Indian skipper to try out his own off-spinners.

With Sri Lanka's score 147/6, Rohit had an opportunity to showcase his skills with the ball.

Remarkably enough, Rohit also has a hat-trick to his name. But it came in T20 cricket while playing for Deccan Chargers against Mumbai Indians. He ended with figures of 4/6 in 2009 season of Indian Premier League. Ironically, the Indian skipper had earlier commented that "I will focus on my batting. We have enough bowlers in the squad that can roll their arm over."

At 37 years and 96 days, Rohit also became the oldest Indian skipper in ODIs format to bowl. However, the off-spinner, who has a knack for picking wickets, ended wicketless in his spell, conceding 11 runs.

In the end, contributions from Dunith Wellalage (39 off 35) and Kamindu Mendis (40 off 44) yet again took Sri Lanka over the 200-run mark, as the Islanders ended with 240 on board after 50 overs.
