Rohit Paudel becomes the youngest captain in T20 World Cup history

Paudel, like most of the others in the Nepal squad, will be making his T20 World Cup debut against the Netherlands

Ten years after their T20 World Cup debut, Nepal will be making their second World Cup appearance here on June 4 (Tuesday) at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. At the toss, their skipper Rohit Paudel made history, becoming the youngest captain (21 years 276 days) in T20 World Cup history. Paudel has led the Rhinos in 28 T20Is, with them winning 16 of those games, with ten losses, one tie and one no result, with a 57% win percentage.

“It is a big occasion for us, we're here after 10 years, it was always a dream to play in a World Cup. Feel happy, playing for Nepal is a pleasure and I have enjoyed it. We're looking to win this game and then take it one at a time. Toss doesn't matter if you play good cricket,” Paudel said at the toss.

Interestingly, Paudel was just 11 when Nepal were in the T20 World Cup last time. Even at the pre-match press conference, Paudel spoke about fulfilling his dream of leading the Nepalese side.

"As a kid, it was my dream, it was everyone's dream. Tomorrow, we are going to fulfill that dream. If we play in the moment, we can present our best skills and make Nepal proud. We can motivate the next generation. That is important. This is a big occasion for everyone, especially for Nepal. Everyone is waiting for this," Paudel said at the pre-match press conference.

Prior to today’s game, Zimbabwe’s Prosper Utseya led the Chevrons in the 2007 T20 World Cup, where they incidentally beat a strong Australian outfit. Later, in 2010, Shakib Al Hasan led Bangladesh in the Caribbean, at the age of 23 years and 38 days beating Mohammad Ashraful’s record of leading Bangladesh at the age of 23 years and 68 days in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup.

Incidentally, three of the four youngest skippers at the global event have been from Asia.
