Rizwan, Shaheen, Shadab, Shakeel & Haris to captain Champions Cup sides

Pakistan’s ODI skipper Babar Azam won't be captaining any side in the tournament

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), on Friday (September 6), announced Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi, Shadab Khan, Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Haris as the captains of the five teams for the Champions Cup One-Day tournament.

The 50-over tournament starts on September 12 and will be played at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.

While Rizwan will captain the Lions, Wolves will be led by Shaheen and Shakeel will steer the Panthers along in the tournament. Shadab will skipper the Dolphins while the Stallions will have the domestic stalwart Haris as their leader for the tournament which will feature 14 matches in total.

Interestingly, Pakistan’s ODI skipper Babar Azam has not been named any side's leader. He is part of the Stallions side, coached and mentored by his former teammate Shoaib Malik and captain by Haris, who has played under him for Pakistan senior men’s side and Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The final squads have yet not been announced with September 10 being the last date for the teams to trim the squad size to 15. All the centrally contracted players of the Pakistan side are part of the tournament.

Misbah Ul-Haq, the mentor of the Wolves, had said that fitness would be the top priority and any player failing the test would have to bear the brunt. Sharjeel Khan has not been selected in any of the squads, mainly because of that. Apart from Malik and Misbah, Waqar Younis, Saqlain Mushtaq and Sarfraz Ahmed are the other three mentors. Sarfaraz is a player-mentor for the Dolphins.
