Ambati Rayudu, who announced his retirement from all formats of the game in India to ply his trade in the overseas league, has withdrawn from the inaugural edition of the Major League Cricket (MLC). The right-handed batter was expected to be part of Chennai Super Kings (CSK)’s sister franchise, Texas Super Kings.
Rayudu’s decision has been influenced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s proposal to introduce a year cooling-off period for retired players before participation in overseas leagues. The proposal, put forward at the Apex Council meeting, is set to be ratified at BCCI’s AGM in September.
"We'll come out with a policy to prevent the trend of pre-determined retirement," secretary Jay Shah said after the Apex Council meeting. "The office bearers will make a policy and send it back for approval."
Rayudu was one of the two CSK stars, alongside Mitchell Santner and Devon Conway, to be picked in the Texas line-up, also coached by Stephen Fleming. With the tournament set to begin in less than a week, Texas would be forced into roping a late replacement for the right-handed batter in their squad.
