Ravichandran Ashwin scripts Wankhede history

The off-spinner, who has had a quiet series so far, went wicketless in the first innings

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin scripted history at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, by picking up the most Test wickets by a bowler at the venue. When he had Rachin Ravindra stumped, he moved on to 39 Test wickets at the venue, surpassing Anil Kumble.

He further added to his tally at the venue with the wickets of Glenn Phillips and Will Young.

In addition to this, Wankhede is now Ashwin's most productive venue in international cricket, with 44 scalps — his personal best—surpassing Chennai (42) and Mirpur (38).

He achieved this feat on Day two of the ongoing Test against New Zealand in Mumbai. Ashwin has had a series to forget so far, having managed just eight scalps so far in three matches. His fellow spinners, Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja, have managed to have more impact.

In fact, in the first innings, Ashwin went wicketless in the first innings for the third time this year. In innings where he had bowled at least 12 overs, Ashwin had gone wicketless just twice between 2011 and 2023 in home Tests.

The 38-year-old off-spinner is India's second-highest wicket-taker with 535 scalps, only behind Kumble, who picked up 619 wickets.
