Ravichandran Ashwin involved in a bizarre DRS call during TNPL 2023

The off-spinner counter-reviewed a decision by the TV umpire creating a bit of a stir in the 13th over of the first innings

After missing out on a place in the playing XI for the summit clash of the World Test Championship, Ravichandran Ashwin has rekindled with the Dindigul Dragons in the ongoing edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League.

The off-spinner was in the middle of all the drama in the fourth league game of the season as he counter-reviewed a decision by the television umpire, much to the surprise of all the fans and the commentators.

In the 13th over of the first innings against Ba11sy Trichy in Coimbatore, Ashwin appealed for a caught behind off Rajkumar, which the onfield umpire adjudged out.

However, the batter reviewed the decision, and the third umpire went through the process of analysing the footage before overturning the decision citing a clear gap between bat and pad.

Ashwin was not happy with the final verdict and wanted another look, prompting the third umpire to go through the process once again. However, the decision stayed in favour of the batter, making it a bizarre instance of a player reviewing a DRS call.

"When I saw it on the big screen, I felt, see DRS is new to this competition. Generally, the spike comes a little ahead of the bat even if there's an edge," Ashwin said in the post-match presentation.

"So that's why if the evidence is conclusive, only then you can overturn the decision. I was not quite happy, so that's why I reviewed it again, thinking maybe they will look at it from another angle, that's all," he further added.

Despite all the drama, the Dragons produced a comprehensive performance to record a six-wicket win and start their campaign with a bang in the tournament.
