Will Quinton de Kock play for South Africa again? Coach Rob Walter unsure

De Kock, 31, has already retired from ODIs and Tests and is no longer a centrally contracted South Africa player

South Africa’s white-ball coach Rob Walter has admitted that, much like everyone else, he is in the dark about the international future of Quinton de Kock

De Kock, 31, has already retired from ODIs and Tests and is no longer a centrally contracted South Africa player. There are genuine fears that the wicketkeeper batter might have made his last ever appearance for the Proteas in the T20 World Cup final against India in Barbados last week.

But Walter, speaking on July 4 (Thursday), was hopeful of the 31-year-old playing international cricket again, and confirmed that the left-hander has not officially called it quits, yet.

"Quinny's an enigma. He hasn't officially called time. So we have that little glimmer of hope that sits in the background," Walter said, reported ESPNcricinfo.

"Quinny has very high standards for himself and has dreamed about a World Cup win for a very long time. Has had a number of knocks along the way, not least this last final, You would have seen that he was very emotional with it. Whether we see him again, time will tell."

Walter confirmed that he personally hadn’t spoken to de Kock about his future.

"I've had no conversations with him. It wasn't the right time after the final to have that conversation," Walter said.

"So let me leave it at saying your guess is as good as mine."

After retiring from ODIs in the aftermath of the 2023 World Cup, de Kock has been somewhat of a T20 globetrotter. The last six months have seen him play in the Indian Premier League (IPL), SA20 and Big Bash League (BBL). In the coming days, he will turn up for the Seattle Orcas in the second edition of the Major League Cricket (MLC).

The 31-year-old had a mixed T20WC 2024. He struggled at the start of the competition but eventually finished the tournament as the fourth-highest run-getter, with 243 runs overall.
