Left out of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad for disciplinary and fitness reasons, Prithvi Shaw will make a comeback to the state side in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy that will commence from November 23. The 25-year-old has been named in Mumbai’s 18-man squad for SMAT 2024/25, which will be led by Shreyas Iyer.
However, despite being named in Mumbai’s SMAT squad, there is no guarantee that this will serve as a boost to Shaw's hopes of getting picked in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as Mumbai will play only one game before the commencement of the mega auction on November 24.
Shaw missed the 2023 edition of the SMAT due to a knee injury, and then had a rather forgettable IPL 2024, where, despite an injury to David Warner, he only played eight games before getting dropped mid-way through the season. In IPL 2024, Shaw was benched by both Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abishek Porel, who pipped him as first-choice openers. The right-hander eventually got released by the Capitals ahead of the mega auction.
Shaw is one of many big names in Mumbai’s squad for the forthcoming season. The team will have the experience of Ajinkya Rahane and Shardul Thakur and also the youthful exuberance of Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Impressive up-and-coming all-rounder Tanush Kotian is also expected to play the entire season for Mumbai.
The Iyer-led side will start their campaign off against Goa on November 23 (Saturday).
