17 years ago, the first hat-trick in T20 World Cup history, and subsequently the first T20WC hat-trick for Australia, was taken by a certain Brett Lee against Bangladesh.
Fast forward to 2024, history has sort of repeated itself as Pat Cummins has become the second Australian bowler after Brett Lee to take a T20WC hat-trick. Coincidentally, this hat-trick has also come against Bangladesh of all sides.
Cummins’ hat-trick is the first of this particular T20 World Cup edition and the third of this calendar year after Nuwan Thushara (Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh) and Aqib Ilyas (Oman vs Cambodia).
Cummins’ victims on the night were Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan and Towhid Hridoy.
Mahmudullah was the first of the three wickets to fall: the 38-year-old departed after dragging a pull shot back onto his stumps. He was replaced by Mahedi Hasan, who perished immediately after hitting an attempted uppercut straight into the hands of the fielder at third man, Adam Zampa.
The two aforementioned wickets falling on the fifth and sixth ball of the over meant that Cummins had to wait one full over before having the opportunity to script history.
But the wait didn’t deter or disrupt the 31-year-old, who completed his hat-trick in the final over of the Bangladesh innings by removing Hridoy. The right-hander looked to scoop Cummins over short fine-leg, but the ball went straight into the hands of Josh Hazlewood, who completed an easy catch to gift his mate a hat-trick.
This was Cummins’ first-ever hat-trick in international cricket. He is the fourth Australian bowler to have picked up a T20I hat-trick after Brett Lee, Ashton Agar and Nathan Ellis. Remarkably, barring Agar, the others have all ended up taking their respective hat-tricks against the same opponent, Bangladesh.
Cummins’ hat-trick is the seventh in T20 World Cup history. The last bowler to take a hat-trick was Ireland’s Josh Little in the 2022 edition against New Zealand.
