Mumbai Indians (MI) entered the clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 17 (Friday) hoping to score a feel-good consolation win in front of their home fans, but the MI faithful at the Wankhede were witness to yet another disappointing showing from their side as the five-time champions slipped to their tenth defeat of the season, their joint-most in an IPL campaign.
Chasing 215, MI were on track for a win at 89/1 in the 10th over, but then had a disappointing finish that sort of summed up their season, as they slipped to an 18-run defeat.
The defeat ensured wooden spoon for MI, and in the aftermath of the game, skipper Hardik Pandya cut a disappointed figure.
“Quite difficult. Did not play good quality cricket, eventually cost us the whole season,” Pandya said post the game.
“It's a professional world. Have to always come out and put our best foot forward. But yes, as a group we could not play quality cricket or smart cricket.”
All MI can do, Pandya said, is put the disappointment of IPL 2024 behind them and look forward to next season.
“Too early to point out what went wrong. The whole season kind of went wrong. We can pass this game as another one (that went wrong). We have to now look forward to the next season.”
With the defeat, MI have earned their second wooden spoon in three seasons, after finishing bottom of the table in IPL 2022 as well. After having an extraordinary season in 2020, they are now winless in four seasons, and have finished the 2022-24 IPL cycle with no trophies, reaching the playoffs just once.
