Allan Border, the Aussie great on whom the Test series between India and Australia is named the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), was all praise for India's vice-captain and most successful bowler in BGT 2024-25, Jasprit Bumrah. The former Australia captain compared the Indian to West Indian great Malcolm Marshall.
“I can’t properly compare him to Marshall because I never faced Bumrah but just watching him, there is not much (between them). Bumrah is remarkable. He rarely bowls a spell without taking a wicket. He is different,” Border was quoted as saying to the News Corp.
“Because of his action, he lets the ball go later. And he smiles all the time. He can beat a batsman three times in a row and smile each time. I have never seen anyone like him,” added the 69-year-old.
He is not wrong in the sense that both Bumrah and Marshall have identical numbers after 43 Tests in their respective careers.
While Bumrah is currently playing his 43rd Test and has 191 wickets to his name in 82 innings, Marshall had 205 in 79 innings. Among other parameters, Bumrah is ahead of the West Indian legend except for one where he is miles behind.
Marshall never bowled an extra in his first 43 Tests, while Bumrah has bowled 91 No-balls alone.
When it comes to bowling away from home and especially in Australia, the two are once again neck to neck. Though Bumrah has 50 wickets from 10 matches and Marshall has only 45, the West Indian accounted for five five-wicket hauls, two more than Bumrah.
Bumrah’s average of 17.8 in Australia is not only better than Marshall’s 23.2 but is the best among all the bowlers to have taken at least 20 wickets on Australian soil in the last 100 years.
