The meeting between the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Indian Premier League (IPL)team owners has ended in a stalemate, as there were many disagreements on the mega auction.
According to the reports, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) owner Shahrukh Khan was very vocal against having a mega auction ahead of the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) owner Kavya Maran also supported him in this regard. The report from Cricbuzz also mentioned that Shahrukh Khan was involved in a heated argument with Ness Wadia, the owner of Punjab Kings (PBKS), over the number of retentions.
Maran, whose franchise reached the final of IPL 2024 and boasts of exciting young talent like Abhishek Sharma, also gave a statement to Cricbuzz where she expressed strong views against the mega auction, as it is detrimental to the efforts of the franchises in developing players and bench strength painstakingly.
“It takes a lot of time to build a squad, and as discussed, it also takes quite a bit of time and investment for the younger players to mature,” Maran said.
“It has taken Abhishek Sharma three years to become consistent with his performances. You would agree that there are many such examples in other teams too.”
Meanwhile, Parth Jindal, the owner of Delhi Capitals (DC), which finished sixth in IPL 2024, was in favour of mega auctions.
“I'm surprised that there was a debate over continuation of the big auction in the first place. I'm personally in favour of it.”
Discussions also took place on the Impact Player Rule and retentions. However, the ball is now in BCCI’s court. The decision on auctions will further determine how many retentions will team be allowed for the upcoming IPL season. BCCI has informed the franchises that it will come up with a decision by the end of August.
