Nepal's heartbreaking loss hands the Netherlands a lifeline

The Rhinos have crashed out of the T20 World Cup, but not before giving South Africa a run for their money

With a heartbreaking one-run loss against South Africa, Nepal have crashed out of the T20 World Cup 2024. They have one point from three games and will take on Bangladesh in St Vincent on June 16 (Sunday), and even a win for the Rhinos will see them get to only three points. Bangladesh already have four points against them and need a win against Nepal to guarantee them a spot in the Super Eights.

Bangladesh can still go through to the next round even if they lose to Nepal, but they will then be dependent on the result of the Sri Lanka vs Netherlands match on Sunday in St Lucia. However, a win for the Tigers will see them progress regardless of what happens in the match between Sri Lanka and the Netherlands.

If the Netherlands beat Sri Lanka, they will get to four points, but it will not matter as long as Bangladesh get the win over Nepal. However, a loss for Bangladesh and a significantly big win for the Dutch will see the Scott Edwards-led side progress.

Rohit Paudel's Nepal had a terrific chance of staying in the hunt for a place in the Super Eights, but despite being on top for most part of the match, just fell short against the Proteas in St Vincent. Had they won, all they would have had to do was beat Bangladesh in their final game to progress.

Nepal have played 13 T20 Internationals (T20I) against full-members. They have lost 12, while one - the recent one against Sri Lanka in Florida - was washed out.
