There was a lot of uncertainty around MS Dhoni’s IPL career at the end of the 2024 season. While the speculations were rife that the clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) would be his last IPL game, it was refuted when Chennai Super Kings retained him as an ‘uncapped player’ ahead of the 2025 edition.
With Dhoni himself claiming that there are a ‘few more years’ of cricket left in him, CSK’s CEO Kasi Viswanathan revealed the 43-year-old would play his last IPL match in Chennai. However, he had no update on when it will be.
"As far as Mahi bhai is concerned, you know he keeps everything to himself. It comes out at the last moment only," Viswanathan told Ambati Rayudu on Provoke TV.
"Knowing the passion he has for CSK, and also knowing the following he has, and he also mentioned in one of the interviews that he'll play his last game in Chennai, we're hoping that he will continue as far as CSK is concerned. As long as MS wants to play, the doors are open," he added.
The then 42-year-old Dhoni was a blockbuster in the 2024 edition, with 161 runs at a strike rate of 220.55, with 27 boundaries in the competition. CSK have retained Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Matheesha Pathirana, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shivam Dube ahead of the 2025 IPL Auction.
