Pakistan announced Mohammad Rizwan as their new One-Day International (ODI) and T20 International (T20I) captain. Salman Ali Agha was named as his deputy. The announcement came after Babar Azam stepped down as their white-ball captain earlier this month.
Rizwan's first set of appointments will be to lead Pakistan in the white-ball tour of Australia and Zimbabwe. Pakistan will play three ODIs and as many T20Is, starting November 4 in Australia. Following that tour, the Men in Green will travel to Zimbabwe where they will play three ODIs and three T20Is from November 24 onwards.
Rizwan will, however, be rested for the T20I leg of the Zimbabwe tour, which will pave the way for Agha to lead Pakistan for the first time. Agha has played 17 Tests and 26 ODIs so far but is yet to be capped in T20Is. Rizwan has never led Pakistan in white-ball cricket before but has captained his nation in two Tests against New Zealand in 2020-21.
Pakistan are yet to play the 50-over format since failing to make the semi-final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. In the recent T20 World Cup, Pakistan did not make it to the Super 8s after losing to the USA in the group stages. As a result, the pressure on Babar began to mount, and he resigned eventually.
