The Hundred 2024 recap: Curran sizzles; Russell & Phillips flop

Here are the hits, misses and breakout performances from the fourth edition of The Hundred

The Oval Invincibles lived up to their name as they were ‘invincible’ throughout the tournament, resulting in them defending their title.

The Invincibles got direct qualification to the final after topping the table with six wins in eight games. In the final, a thorough team performance resulted in them beating Southern Brave and joining their female counterparts to be the only team to win two championships in The Hundred.

Final: Oval Invincibles beat Southern Brave by 17 runs

Hits of The Hundred 2024

James Vince (Southern Brave)

English opener James Vince had an outstanding season both as a batter and as a captain.

As captain, he led Southern Brave to the final, with his side winning six of the nine games they played before falling short in the final. As a batter, no other individual smashed as many runs as Vince as he became the first batter to score 400+ runs in a single, The Hundred edition. He smashed four fifties across ten games, smashing 58 (the most boundaries) in the season.

Adam Zampa (Oval Invincibles)

Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa was tremendous in The Hundred 2024. The leggie took 19 wickets, which was the joint-most in this season and overall in an edition of The Hundred. He went wicketless only once in ten games, showcasing his capability as a consistent wicket-taker. He, along with the Curran brothers, carried the bowling line-up of the Invincibles.

Sam Curran (Oval Invincibles)

Sam Curran had a redemption season in the Hundred 2024. The English all-rounder, who in recent times struggled in other T20 competitions like IPL, SA20 and even for the England national team, was unstoppable this season as he scored 212 runs with the bat and took 17 wickets with the ball.

He scored two fifties, took a hat-trick and a five-wicket haul in the tournament. His all-round brilliance played a key role in the Invincibles' championship win and deservedly earned him the “Player of the Tournament” award.

Tim Southee (Birmingham Phoenix)

Tim Southee did extremely well in the 2024 season of The Hundred. The Kiwi legend took 14 wickets at an excellent strike rate of 12.1, which was one of the best for a bowler in the season. His economy of 6.8 was outstanding compared to other pacers, playing a vital role in Birmingham reaching the knockouts.

Misses of The Men’s Hundred 2024

Andre Russell (London Spirit)

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell had a terrible season as he failed to deliver both with bat and ball. He scored only 90 runs in eight games at an average of 12.86. With the ball, he picked up just one wicket in six innings and was highly expensive, going at a rate of 11.0 per over, failing to deliver both with the bat and ball.

Liam Livingstone (Birmingham Phoenix)

Liam Livingstone had a quiet season as the English all-rounder scored 134 runs, averaging 22.3 in seven games. He went past fifty only once. He smashed just six maximums, four of which came in a single contest (in the Eliminator). The right-hander had his worst season with the ball as he failed to pick up a single wicket. He was, in fact, made to bowl only in three games, and he conceded 34 runs in 15 balls.

Sikandar Raza (Manchester Originals)

Sikandar Raza failed to make an impression in his debut in this competition. Playing for the first time, he picked up only four wickets in six innings, bowling 90 balls at an economy of 8.8. Coming out to bat in the slog sets, the Zimbabwean all-rounder managed only 59 runs in eight innings, averaging just 8.43, which was the second-worst average for a batter this edition.

Glenn Phillips (Welsh Fire)

With just 83 runs in six innings, the Kiwi all-rounder Glenn Phillips failed to make an impact in the recently concluded edition of The Hundred. Apart from a 48 against Southern Brave, he failed to cross the 12-run mark in the remaining five innings. He did not get much of a chance to showcase his off-spin as he bowled just 10 balls, conceding 15 runs while failing to take a wicket.

Breakout Performance in The Men’s Hundred 2024

Jordan Cox (Oval Invincibles)

Make the most of your opportunities. That's exactly what Jordan Cox did this year.

The right-handed middle-order batter got starts in the first three games but failed to make a big impact. But as the business end rolled in and his selection in the Sri Lanka Test series got confirmed, his confidence peaked as he scored a brilliant 61* against London Spirit, ending the season with four 25+ scores.

He finished the season with 214 runs in seven games at a strike rate of 144, making it his best season in The Hundred.
