Megan Schutt became the leading wicket-taker in the history of the Women’s T20 World Cup. The Australian fast bowler, on October 8 (Tuesday), dismissed New Zealand’s Georgia Plimmer to go past former South Africa seamer Shabnim Ismail‘s tally of 43 wickets.
While Ismail took 32 matches to get to 43 wickets, Schutt has surpassed that record in just 26 Women’s T20WC encounters. She knocked over Plimmer with a back-of-a-length delivery that not only kept a bit low but also came back in from way outside off to rattle the stumps.
The right-armer featured in her first T20 World Cup in 2016 and claimed seven wickets in six games at an average of 15.9. In the next three World Cups, she picked up at least 10 wickets each.
She ended the 2018 edition as the joint-highest wicket-taker and then took 13 wickets in the 2020 competition to emerge as the leading wicket-taker. She was the only bowler to take more than 10 wickets in the 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia.
If that was not enough, the seamer once again claimed 10 wickets in the 2023 edition and finished the tournament with the second-most number of wickets.
Schutt was also the Player of the Match in Australia’s first game of the ongoing tournament, picking up 3/12 in her four overs against Sri Lanka in Sharjah.
Overall, Schutt has 141 wickets in the 20-over format, only behind Pakistan’s Nida Dar, who has 143 wickets in Women’s T20Is.
