Mayank Yadav earns maiden India call-up for T20Is vs Bangladesh

Varun Chakaravarthy also returns to the team after last featuring for India in 2021

Delhi fast bowler Mayank Yadav earned his maiden India call-up after being named in the T20 International (T20I) squad against Bangladesh on September 28 (Saturday). Mayank rose to prominence due to his ability to bowl over 140 KMPH consistently in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, where he picked up seven wickets at an economy rate of under seven for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). However, his campaign came to an abrupt end after just four matches due to a lower abdominal strain.

Varun Chakaravarthy also returned to the squad after last featuring for the Men in Blue at the T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE. He finished IPL 2024 as the second-highest wicket-taker with 21 scalps, paving the way for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to win their first title in a decade. His IPL teammate Harshit Rana, too, earned a call-up. Rana was previously part of the T20Is against Zimbabwe and received his maiden One-Day International (ODI) call-up for the Sri Lanka tour, but is yet to make his international debut.

Abhishek Sharma, who scored a superb ton in the T20I against Zimbabwe post India's triumphant T20 World Cup campaign also made a comeback after missing out from the tour of Sri Lanka. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was named in the T20I squad for Zimbabwe tour and later replaced by Shivam Dube after picking up an injury, was named in the India squad for Bangladesh T20Is.

Riyan Parag was handed a longer rope after not too many inspiring performances in his first seven white-ball matches. Jitesh Sharma who had an IPL to forget, managing just 187 runs at 17 from 12 innings, would likely be a back-up option for Sanju Samson. Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, along with Chakaravarthy are the frontline spin options at India's disposal, while Arshdeep Singh, Mayank, Harshit, along with Hardik Pandya, Dube and Nitish make up the pace battery.

Notably, big guns like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant have been rested.

The T20Is get underway from October 6 in Gwalior. The action would then shift to Delhi (October 9) and Hyderabad (October 12) for the second and third game, respectively.

India squad for Bangladesh T20Is: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, Riyan Parag, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakaravarthy, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Mayank Yadav
