Mark Wood to replace retired James Anderson in Nottingham Test

Anderson is still a part of England’s setup, having taken the role of their bowling coach immediately after his retirement

England have named one change in their Playing XI for the second Test of the three-match Test series against West Indies. Mark Wood will come in for James Anderson who retired after the Lord’s Test, drawing curtains on his 188-Test-long career.

Wood infuses fearsome pace in England’s pace attack. He featured in their last Test before this series, playing the Dharamsala Test against India in March. However, he has not played a red-ball match this season, skipping the ongoing County Championship to rest after England’s T20 World Cup campaign.

Anderson is still a part of England’s setup, having taken the role of their bowling coach immediately after his retirement. The 41-year-old picked 4/58 in England’s innings victory at Lord’s. England bowled West Indies out for 121 and 136, taking less than 90 overs in both innings combined. Gus Atkinson was awarded the Player of the Match on his debut, picking 12/106.

Atkinson and Wood are the fastest bowlers going around in the county circuit.

Wood was added to the Test squad after the first Test. Meanwhile, Matthew Potts (six Tests) and Dillon Pennington (yet to debut) will continue to warm the bench after being picked originally for the first two Tests.

The rest of the XI is the same. The off-spinner Shoaib Bashir didn’t bowl in the first Test but keeps his place for Trent Bridge.

England’s Playing XI in Nottingham:

Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes ( c ), Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Mark Wood, Shoaib Bashir
