Dawid Malan, when on song, was one of the most easy on the eye left-handers of the last decade. Having started his career for England as a Test batter, he eventually found unprecedented success in the shortest format of the game. South Africa-born Malan is the most successful English opener in the T20Is, and numbers back up his magnificent achievements.
Though he announced his retirement from international cricket on August 28 (Wednesday), his magic with the bat in hand will keep his international cricket memories alive for decades to come.
Fastest to 1,000 T20I runs among Test-playing nation batters
Malan reached the milestone of 1,000 T20I runs in only his 24th innings, faster than any other batter in cricket history. He was two innings ahead of Pakistan’s Babar Azam and five ahead of India’s Virat Kohli.
Most 50-plus scores after 20 T20I innings
The Southpaw is also the only batter to date to put on 10 50-plus scores in the first 20 innings of his T20I career. Among those 10 scores is a hundred and an unbeaten 99 as well. Aiden Markram of South Africa is the closest among Test-playing nations’ batters, with eight in his first 20 innings.
Most runs after 20 T20I innings
Courtesy of those fantastic start, the 37-year-old also holds the record for most runs scored by a batter in the first 20 innings of their T20I career. He is 60 runs ahead of the number two batter on the list.
Highest ICC rating points for a T20I batter
Malan, who achieved a rating point of 915 when he was the number one T20I batter briefly between September 2020 and October 2021, holds the record for the highest rating points accumulated by any batter in ICC rankings history.
Joint-fastest to 100 boundaries
The Middlesex man is also the joint fastest to 100 boundaries in T20Is among players from Test-playing nations. He reached the milestone in 18 innings. India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal, Afghanistan’s Hazaratullah Zazai and former Australia skipper Aaron Finch have achieved the same feat.
First non-opener to score a T20I ton for England
When Malan romped up to his first T20I century in only his ninth innings of the career in Napier, New Zealand, he became the first non-opener to score a ton for England in the shortest format. In that game, Malan batted at number three and scored an unbeaten 103 off just 51 balls against hosts New Zealand. Livingstone is the only other non-opener to score a T20I ton for England
